Westerton Care Home’s Trip to the Senior Sporting Games

Westerton Care Home residents participating in the 2024 Senior Sporting Games

At Westerton Care Home, supporting our residents' active, enriched lives is central to everything we do. Our recent trip to the 2024 Senior Sporting Games was a testament to that commitment, as we proudly joined care home communities in a celebration of fitness, friendship, and fun. Held in Glasgow, this unique event, organized by the Erskine Veterans Charity and Glasgow Caledonian University, brought together residents from various homes to compete, socialise, and have fun through the joy of sports.

The Senior Sporting Games 2024

The 2024 Senior Sporting Games was more than just a competition—it was a celebration of what it means to age actively. Held in collaboration with the Erskine Veterans Charity, the Games featured a range of athletic activities designed for older adults. From light exercises to more competitive events, this was a space where people could not only show off their sporting skills but also enjoy camaraderie and a bit of friendly competition with other care homes.

Our residents had a great day out and enjoyed competing with other homes. Westerton Care Home in Bearsden even won one gold and two silver medals. The Team were then invited to an afternoon tea awards ceremony at the Glynhill Hotel and Spa.

Highlights of the Games

The event started with a warm welcome from the organisers, followed by a series of light exercises to warm up the participants. From there, the real fun began. Our residents participated in a range of events, including walking races, bocce, and even a light-hearted football match, where a sense of teamwork and accomplishment was evident.

Our care team cheered from the sidelines, providing moral support and encouragement. The positive energy was undeniable as residents from different homes formed new friendships and cheered for each other. This sense of community and connection was a powerful reminder of the impact events like the Senior Sporting Games can have on the well-being of older adults.

Building Connections with Other Care Homes

One of the standout aspects of the Senior Sporting Games was the opportunity to connect with other care homes across Scotland. The residents engaged with each other, sharing stories, laughs, and experiences from their own homes.

Participating in the Senior Sporting Games was a natural extension of our commitment to creating enriching experiences for our residents. At Westerton Care Home, we focus on creating an environment where people in residential homes can live fulfilling lives. We offer a range of services, from dementia and nursing care to palliative and respite care, ensuring that each resident receives the personalised support they need.

Our activities program is designed to keep residents engaged—whether through physical exercise, creative arts, or community trips. The Games were an exciting new chapter in this ongoing journey, and we are already looking forward to next year’s event! For more information about our wellbeing programme click here.
